Yesterday, with tears flowing freely, I read the last chapter of A Knock at the Door. I’m still listening to the audio book (included in the price on Spotify Premium), beautifully read by the author.
It’s such a great book! I’m confident that it will have wide appeal. I think you would find it intriguing. Just let your mind ponder what you’d do if a man, turned up on your doorstep, holding a bag containing all his worldly belongings in one hand, and a frozen chicken in the other.
When Rob invites Ronnie in, it changes their lives in many ways. As you keep reading, you realise it’s going to be more than a book about taking in a homeless man. There’s also quite a lot of Rob’s own story. It’s quite a journey from last in the class to Robert Parsons, OBE, an award he was privileged to receive from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II herself.
As days turn into weeks, Rob and his wife Dianne keep asking each other What are we going to do? Weeks become years, and Rob and Dianne become parents to Katie and Lloyd. Dianne becomes ill. Over and over they ask each other Is now the time to find a place for Ronnie?
But they continue to care for Ronnie, and he for them, over 45 years. I don’t want to spoil it for you, which I will do, if I share too much. I can’t remember the last time I was so moved. It’s a great story, and Rob tells it compellingly.
The ebook is not expensive, but if you prefer a physical book, it’s only available in hardback at the moment, and at a hardback price. I hope there will be a paperback and it will go through many reprintings.
