The genealogy of Jesus

Nancy Dawson spent twenty years researching her book All the Genealogies of the Bible. She took her work to two distinguished biblical scholars - Eugene Merrill (Old Testament) and Andreas Kostenberger (New Testament).

I find this genealogy of Jesus fascinating. Most of it comes from the Bible. But some of it is educated guesses and some is based on tradition. Notice that according to this chart, Zebedee’s wife is Mary’s sister Salome (based on harmonising information from Matthew, Mark and John),* making James and John Jesus’ cousins, and thus, more closely related than John the Baptist, Jesus’ second cousin.

According to tradition, Mary’s father Joachim was the brother of Joseph of Arimathea, making him Jesus’ great-uncle.
