What is the most thought-provoking comment about yourself which you accidentally overheard ?
This is a comment my father made which made me think. I’m not saying it is the most thought-provoking thing anyone has ever said!
We gave Dad a five year diary for Christmas in 1964. I was twelve at the time, and about to enter high school, after Christmas and the summer holidays. Dad filled it in religiously for thirty years. He used to sit at a table after dinner, read his Bible and then write in his diary. We thought it was the most boring diary ever! He would write things like this:
Sunday. All hands to church.
Or he’d write about the weather and what he had been planting in the garden. If he wasn’t well, he’d write comments about not being able to work.
But, there’s this one comment he wrote which I ponder over:
David at camp. House quiet.
Did he mean I make a lot of noise? Did he mean he missed my music? Did he mean that it was a relief to have some peace for a few days? I’ll never know!
